The 25 Best Star Wars Books (From Both Legends & Canon)

This post may contain affiliate links. (What's this?)

While it’s possible to argue for hours over which of the Star Wars movies is the best, there’s at least one argument in the fandom that’s potentially even more contentious:

Deciding which novels constitute the best Star Wars books.

Image via StarWars.com

After all, there are only nine films in the Skywalker saga, plus two standalone anthologies so far (and no, I’m not counting the Christmas special, thank you very much).

And after the original trilogy, those 11 movies have varied wildly in quality.

But between the official (now Disney-owned) canon and the Legends series, there are dozens and dozens of great Star Wars books in print, and the quality difference between the top titles is much subtler and more subjective than the quality gap between the movies.

To help you suss out the ones most worth reading, in this post I’ve rounded up the 25 best Star Wars books from both canon and Legends.

In addition to providing the official synopsis of each book, I’ve also provided their aggregate ratings on Amazon, so you can get a sense of which Star Wars novels our fellow fans value most.

Let the reading (and let’s just be the honest – the arguing) begin!

Aftermath

By Chuck Wendig

Star Wars Aftermath Cover

4.6 Stars on Amazon*
Official Synopsis:

As the Empire reels from its critical defeats at the Battle of Endor, the Rebel Alliance—now a fledgling New Republic—presses its advantage by hunting down the enemy’s scattered forces before they can regroup and retaliate.

But above the remote planet Akiva, an ominous show of the enemy’s strength is unfolding.

Out on a lone reconnaissance mission, pilot Wedge Antilles watches Imperial Star Destroyers gather like birds of prey circling for a kill, but he’s taken captive before he can report back to the New Republic leaders.

Meanwhile, on the planet’s surface, former rebel fighter Norra Wexley has returned to her native world—war weary, ready to reunite with her estranged son, and eager to build a new life in some distant place.

But when Norra intercepts Wedge Antilles’s urgent distress call, she realizes her time as a freedom fighter is not yet over. What she doesn’t know is just how close the enemy is—or how decisive and dangerous her new mission will be.

Determined to preserve the Empire’s power, the surviving Imperial elite are converging on Akiva for a top-secret emergency summit—to consolidate their forces and rally for a counterstrike.

But they haven’t reckoned on Norra and her newfound allies—her technical-genius son, a Zabrak bounty hunter, and a reprobate Imperial defector—who are prepared to do whatever they must to end the Empire’s oppressive reign once and for all.

*This book kicks off the Aftermath trilogy, which also includes Life Debt and Empire’s End. The trilogy has 4.6 stars on Amazon, but it’s worth noting that Aftermath itself is generally considered the weaker of the three books.

‍Master & Apprentice

By Claudia Gray

Star Wars ‍Master & Apprentice cover

4.7 Stars on Amazon
Official Synopsis:

A Jedi must be a fearless warrior, a guardian of justice, and a scholar in the ways of the Force. But perhaps a Jedi’s most essential duty is to pass on what they have learned.

Master Yoda trained Dooku; Dooku trained Qui-Gon Jinn; and now Qui-Gon has a Padawan of his own. But while Qui-Gon has faced all manner of threats and danger as a Jedi, nothing has ever scared him like the thought of failing his apprentice.

Obi-Wan Kenobi has deep respect for his Master, but struggles to understand him.

Why must Qui-Gon so often disregard the laws that bind the Jedi? Why is Qui-Gon drawn to ancient Jedi prophecies instead of more practical concerns?

And why wasn’t Obi-Wan told that Qui-Gon is considering an invitation to join the Jedi Council—knowing it would mean the end of their partnership? The simple answer scares him: Obi-Wan has failed his Master.

When Jedi Rael Averross, another former student of Dooku, requests their assistance with a political dispute, Jinn and Kenobi travel to the royal court of Pijal for what may be their final mission together.

What should be a simple assignment quickly becomes clouded by deceit, and by visions of violent disaster that take hold in Qui-Gon’s mind.

As Qui-Gon’s faith in prophecy grows, Obi-Wan’s faith in him is tested—just as a threat surfaces that will demand that Master and apprentice come together as never before, or be divided forever.

Han Solo should be basking in his moment of glory.

After all, the cocky smuggler and captain of the Millennium Falcon just played a key role in the daring raid that destroyed the Death Star and landed the first serious blow to the Empire in its war against the Rebel Alliance.

But after losing the reward his heroics earned him, Han’s got nothing to celebrate. Especially since he’s deep in debt to the ruthless crime lord Jabba the Hutt. There’s a bounty on Han’s head—and if he can’t cough up the credits, he’ll surely pay with his hide. The only thing that can save him is a king’s ransom. Or maybe a gangster’s fortune?

That’s what a mysterious stranger is offering in exchange for Han’s less-than-legal help with a riskier-than-usual caper. The payoff will be more than enough for Han to settle up with Jabba—and ensure he never has to haggle with the Hutts again.

All he has to do is infiltrate the ultra-fortified stronghold of a Black Sun crime syndicate underboss and crack the galaxy’s most notoriously impregnable safe. It sounds like a job for miracle workers . . . or madmen.

So Han assembles a gallery of rogues who are a little of both—including his indispensable sidekick Chewbacca and the cunning Lando Calrissian. If anyone can dodge, deceive, and defeat heavily armed thugs, killer droids, and Imperial agents alike—and pull off the heist of the century—it’s Solo’s scoundrels.
