How to Create a Modern-Classic Capsule Wardrobe

…that’s minimalist, timeless, versatile—and handsome as hell

Here’s a secret that I’m willing to share with you, but only on the condition that you never tell my wife I confessed with:

I have way too many damn clothes.

As a style blogger, I’m lucky enough to receive samples from lots of cool brands, and over the years my closet has started to overflow with stylish, modern-classic pieces—much to the chagrin of my (very patient) wife, who not only has to buy her own clothes, but make do with an ever-shrinking share of the closet to store them.

On the one hand, this is great, because I have a ton of options to choose from each and every day.

On the other hand, it’s overwhelming, anxiety-inducing and even stressful, because I have a ton of options to choose from each and every day

Decision fatigue is a real thing, and in the 21st century, we have more than enough choices to make each day, thank you very much.

As the American Medical Association put it, “Making decisions day in and day out—whether they are as easy [as] picking a route home from work…” or, I might add, choosing something to wear in the morning “…can be exhausting and cause people to feel overwhelmed, anxious or stressed.”

The good news is that, for guys who want to look great without burning through a lot of decision-making capacity just to get dressed, there’s a solution that’s both cost-effective and capacity-efficient.

Enter the Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is a streamlined collection of versatile, timeless clothes that keep you looking sharp with minimal effort.

In the guide below, I’ll show you how to take a modern-classic approach to building a sharp capsule wardrobe that’s affordable, versatile, timeless and (most importantly) handsome as hell.

What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a thoughtfully assembled (or to use the parlance of social media influencers, “curated”) collection of clothing designed to mix, match, and adapt to various settings with ease.

The key to a capsule wardrobe is that, in addition to fitting you well, every piece is classic, high-quality, and neutral in color, so they won’t clash with each other or fall out of fashion.

A capsule wardrobe isn’t about cutting corners—it’s about cutting out incompatible pieces, so everything you’re left with works well together.

What I particularly like about the capsule wardrobe method is that it allows you to cut down on the total number of pieces you have to buy, without sacrificing situational appropriateness.

Because every single piece of a capsule wardrobe can be paired well with the rest of the pieces, they can be mixed and matched in dozens (or potentially even hundreds) of different ways, giving you plenty of flexibility at minimal cost.

A CAPSULE WARDROBE ISN’T ABOUT CUTTING CORNERS—IT’S ABOUT CUTTING OUT INCOMPATIBLE PIECES, SO EVERYTHING YOU’RE LEFT WITH WORKS WELL TOGETHER

The Key Principles of a Capsule Wardrobe

The key to building a great capsule wardrobe for men is to focus less on individual pieces and more on the principles that underlie the whole collection.

There are four key elements you’ll want to keep in mind when choosing which pieces to include.

1. Timeless

Opt for classic styles that never go out of fashion

Timeless pieces are the core of any capsule wardrobe because they spare you from the headache of having to keep up with fads, and allow you to invest in a small number of perennially stylish pieces that will look just as good 10 years from now as they do today.

2. Versatile

Each piece can be paired in different ways for different occasions

Versatility is the key to making a capsule wardrobe work effectively.

Choosing pieces that can be styled in various ways across a wide range of settings and situations allows you to unlock (almost) endless outfit combinations without needing a massive wardrobe.

In this case, “versatile” means that any given piece of clothing can shift seamlessly between professional, casual, business casual and even semi-formal occasions with just a few adjustments.

3. Quality Over Quantity

Invest in fewer, better-made pieces that last longer

The quality-over-quantity principle is closely related to the idea of timelessness mentioned above, and equally essential for a capsule wardrobe.

High-quality clothing tends to be more durable, providing greater value and longevity than cheaper, fast-fashion alternatives.

When building out your capsule wardrobe, focus on premium fabrics, expert tailoring, and reliable construction, all of which contribute to an overall elevated look and feel.

4. Neutral Colors

Build a foundation of neutral tones for easy mix-and-match potential

Just as “quality over quantity” follows naturally from the idea of timelessness, neutral colors are the key to achieving the versatility mentioned earlier.

A palette of neutral colors—and here I chiefly mean navy, gray, white, black, and beige—forms the foundation of a successful capsule wardrobe.

These colors can all work seamlessly with one another, offering maximum flexibility and allowing you to mix and match your wardrobe pretty effortlessly.

Neutral colors are also incredibly versatile, as they suit both formal and casual occasions, which further enhances a capsule wardrobe’s adaptability.

The Benefits of a Capsule Wardrobe

I’ve alluded to a lot of these already, but I think it’s worth quickly summarizing – and explicitly spelling out – what makes a capsule wardrobe such a good idea for guys.

1. Effortless Style
A capsule wardrobe takes the guesswork out of styling. With cohesive pieces, it’s easy to put together sharp, sophisticated outfits, which makes getting dressed each day both quick and enjoyable.
2. Increased Versatility
The pieces in a capsule wardrobe are chosen to work seamlessly together, offering countless combinations from just a few items. That versatility means you can dress for almost any occasion with ease.
3. Reduced Decision Fatigue
When you have fewer, better options, choosing an outfit becomes less of a chore. You’ll save time and mental energy in the mornings while still looking put-together.
4. Eco-Friendly and Budget-Friendly
A curated wardrobe minimizes impulsive purchases and focuses on pieces that will stand the test of time. This approach not only reduces waste but also encourages smarter spending by focusing on quality over quantity.

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe (Step-by-Step Guide)

Now that we’ve established the what and the why (or skipped over both using the table of contents—no judgment), let’s get to the good stuff.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to building a capsule wardrobe that combines modern-classic style, versatility, and functionality.

Step 1:
Assessing Your Personal Style & Lifestyle Needs

Before investing any money in a capsule wardrobe, the first step is to evaluate your day-to-day  lifestyle, activities, work environment, and style preferences.

Ask yourself questions like:

  • What settings do I dress for most often? (e.g., office, casual outings, formal events)
  • Which items in my current wardrobe do I wear frequently?
  • What do I want to wear most often? (And, importantly, what will I feel comfortable in?)

The key to looking your best is to choose pieces that are situationally appropriate and well suited to your personality, and that’s true whether you’re building a capsule wardrobe that’s meant to be timeless, or buying a one-off piece for a special event.

So take some time to think consciously about your unique needs, which will allow you to make more intentional choices when choosing pieces for your capsule wardrobe.

Step 2:
Choosing a Color Palette

Color wheel for mens clothes

A neutral color palette basically serves as the foundation for your capsule wardrobe.

It’s what makes your wardrobe so versatile, because it ensures that all the pieces can be mixed and matched together without clashing.

By contrast, failing to stick to a neutral palette negates the whole point of a capsule wardrobe.

It leaves you with certain pieces that only work when properly paired with certain other pieces, which requires deeper knowledge of proper color pairings and forces you to put quite a bit of thought and planning into your outfit.

For maximum versatility, stick to neutral colors with a few accent shades, aiming for a clean, classic and cohesive look (that’s also a little alliterative).

Here’s a sample palette that fits perfectly into the modern-classic aesthetic I recommend, and gives off a timeless, handsome vibe:

  • Main Colors: Navy, gray, black, white, and beige.
  • Accent Colors: Deep green, burgundy, or camel for subtle variety.

Main Colors

Black

Navy

Gray

Khaki

White

Accent Colors

Green

Burgundy

Camel

The approach here is pretty simple – it only includes eight colors – but it provides a huge amount of variety and versatility because each color can be mixed and matched easily.

Step 3:
Essential Pieces for a (Sharp & Modern-Classic) Capsule Wardrobe

As I’ve alluded to a number of times now, a solid capsule wardrobe includes a range of pieces that can be dressed up or down depending on how they’re paired together.

Here’s a breakdown of some must-have modern-classic items, along with a few tips about how to wear them, and where to find well-made, high-value versions.

Tops

White Oxford Shirt

The workhorse of modern menswear, a crisp white button-down is indispensable because it can be incorporated into a (ridiculously) wide range of outfits.

A few years ago I was interviewed by New York Magazine’s Strategist blog about where to find the best OCBD (Oxford cloth button down), where I recommended one from Bonobos

I still stand by the recommendation, but I’ve since tried shirts from State & Liberty and Mizzen & Main that I like just as much.

Full disclosure: the State & Liberty shirt isn’t a true OCBD (in fact, it neither an Oxford nor a button down), so it won’t be the top choice for purists.

But I love the cut and the stretchy fabric, and it accomplishes pretty much the same thing as an OCBD, so it can play a similar role in your capsule wardrobe.

Crew Neck T-Shirts in White, Gray, Black and/or Navy

Good white and black tees are both classic and essential, and gray is arguably the most versatile, which makes it a must-have.

But navy has a casual-yet-refined vibe that adds depth while staying neutral, but it’s not the first color that comes to mind when you think of a plain tee, which makes it a great sleeper choice that will help you stand out from the crowd.

Some guys swear by 100% cotton while others prefer a bit of stretch. Either way, opt for a classic fit that hues closely to your body without being too tight.

Options:

Lightweight Crew Neck Sweater

The perfect layering piece, a lightweight crew neck sweater is a versatile staple.

Its classic design works just as well in business casual offices as it does for laid-back weekend hangs, and it can be worn in a ton of different ways.

Wear it solo for a smart, polished look, layer it over a collared shirt for added warmth and dimension, or pair it under a blazer or suit jacket for a look that’s put-together and sophisticated.

Options:

Polo Shirt

A well-fitted polo perfectly straddles the line between casual and “dressy.”

You can wear it with the jeans or shorts mentioned below for a look that’s casual and cool.

But when you swap out the jeans for dress pants (or even a nicely tapered pair of khakis), the same polo is instantly elevated, giving you a sharper and more refined vibe.

Options:

Grey or Navy Blazer

A cornerstone for any modern-classic wardrobe, a blazer can be worn in formal settings, or used to dress up otherwise casual looks.

For maximum versatility, opt for one in either navy, which works great with khakis or grey chinos, or grey, which pairs well with navy or black pants.

Options:

Bottoms

Dark Jeans

Most days, these will be your go-to.

A high-quality jeans in dark blue is both timeless and versatile, and can be paired with everything from sneakers and a tee to a blazer and a pair of oxfords.

Ignore whatever the fad-of-the-day is and opt for a well-tapered pair that’s slim, but not too skinny. It creates a timeless silhouette that looks sophisticated when you dress it up, and just as good when you go more casual.

These will be your workhorse pants, so I recommend buying multiple pairs.

Options:
Chinos

Chinos are another staple of capsule wardrobes because they’re incredibly versatile. They can be paired with almost any shoe and, much like dark jeans, can easily be dressed up or down.

Start with a classic pair in beige or khaki, and consider adding other neutrals like a charcoal or medium gray, for a little more variety.

Options:

Dress Trousers

While dark jeans and chinos will work in most situations, you’ll want at least one or two proper pairs of dress pants for formal events and dressier offices.

Dark gray or navy are the most classic and versatile colors, and both can elevate your look for in business or semi-formal settings.

Options:

Shorts

A good capsule wardrobe includes pieces that you can wear for years—but not necessarily at every time of year.

When the temperature starts to heat up, leave the chinos in the closet and opt for a good pair of well-tailored shorts in the same neutral colors: khaki, navy, or gray.

You can opt for the same kind of fabrics used to make chinos (i.e. cotton or polyester), but personally I prefer a pair with some stretch, which allows for easier to movement and makes them more versatile.

In terms of fit, opt for a tailored cut that sits about two inches above the knee for a look that’s stylish and timeless.

Options:

Outerwear

Peacoat

If you want to build a capsule wardrobe that’s minimalist in terms of the quantity of pieces, but maximalist in terms of their quality and versatiilty, invest in a good peacoat.

It’s the perfect piece of smart-casual outerwear because it’s timeless, versatile and easy to dress up or down.

A peacoat looked great on WWII sailors, who wore them over thick wool sweaters while fighting off Nazis on the high seas.

It looked great on Daniel Craig’s James Bond in Skyfall, who wore the Billy Reid model below over a shirt and tie while fighting an assassin in a high rise.

And they’ll look just as good 80 years from now, when our grandkids will wear them to fight our robot overlords in a high-stakes battle for the future of earth (#resist).

Options:

Denim Jacket

In warmer months when a peacoat’s too heavy, a good denim jacket will be your go-to.

It doesn’t work for formal occasions (for which you can turn to the trench coat below), but lends an effortlessly cool and rugged vibe to any casual getup.

Options:

Trench Coat

The trench coat serves two purposes in a capsule wardrobe.

First, it gives you a waterproof option that’s both stylish and practical.

Throw it on over a polo to protect yourself from summer showers, or layer it over sweaters, shirts and blazers to stay both warm and dry in fall and winter.

Second, it gives you a slightly dressier warm-weather alternative to the denim jacket above.

If you need an extra layer for a wedding in the spring, business casual office or any other event that’s too dressy for a jean jacket, the trench is a perfect option.

White Sneakers

White sneakers obviously give off a casual vibe, but as the world gets more casual, they become more versatile.

Nowadays you can wear a clean, crisp pair of white sneaks with everything from shorts toa. suit, making them arguably the most important must-have shoe in your arsenal.

The only catch? Keeping them clean can be a bit of a bitch.

To that end, your best bet is to opt for white leather, which is more durable than lightweight mesh fabrics, and can be cleaned using white shoe polish, in addition to traditional cleaning methods. (I shared a few of my favorite cleaning methods with Business Insider a few years back, and I still stand by them.)

The other benefit of white leather is that it gives the sneakers a slightly dressier and more sophisticated vibe, making them easier to dress up.

Options:

Leather Oxfords

If you’re only going to own one dress shoe – and for the love of thunder, you should absolutely own at least one pair of dress shoes – make it an Oxford.

For most guys, Oxfords and Derbies are pretty interchangeable, but Oxfords have a closed-lace design that’s a little more sophisticated, especially if you opt for a cap toe model.

It helps the shoes look sleeker and a little more formal, which makes them easier to dress up, and adds a bit of sharpness tha thelps elevate your casual look when you wear them with jeans or khakis.

Options:

Chukkas or Chelseas

A pair of smart-casual boots can slide right in between your white sneakers and Oxfords on the casual-to-formal spectrum, and give you a good option for cold, wet weather when you don’t want to ruin your shoes.

Chukkas and chelseas both work equally well. But in either case, opt for a more refined almond-shaped toe box, rather than a rounded toe.

It’ll lend them a more sophisticated look that helps offset some of a boot’s inherent ruggedness, making the more versatile and easier to dress up or down.

Leather Belt

A high-quality leather belt is an absolute must, but the key is to choose one that’s not too wide.

Wide, chunky belts give off a more rugged look, which inherently makes them more casual.

But if you’re only going to own one or two belts, you want to make sure they’re versatile enough to dress up or down.

Opt for a strap that’s about 1.25 inches wide, which is still thin enough to work great with formal looks like a suit or business-casual clothes, but not so small that it looks wimpy with jeans and your chukkas.

Pro Tip:
Make ‘Em Match!

Make sure the color of your leather accessories matches the color of your shoes.

If your boots and shoes are dark brown, try to find a belt (and watch band) that’s in the same color family, if not exactly the same shade.

When you have a big wardrobe, it can sometimes be fun to go against the grain and mix and match your colors.

But with a minimalist capsule wardrobe where you’re wearing the same pieces over and over again, you want to keep the colors consistent so that you never have to worry about whether or not they look good together.

Minimalist Watch

The beauty of opting for a minimalist watch is that the more understated your watch design, the more timeless, versatile and classy it is.

In other words, it is the exact opposite of the gaudy, blinged out monstrosity that Tom Brady wore while broadcasting Super Bowl LIX in February of 2025; it cost three-quarters of a million dollars, which is about as much as you’d have to pay me to wear it.

Instead of gaudy gold, stick to a silver color with a clean design and a neutral strap or metal band for a timeless piece that complements any outfit.

Options:

Classic Sunglasses

There may be no single piece of clothing better suited to a capsule wardrobe than sunglasses, because no where to fads come and go more quickly.

One year all the mindless sheep “cool kids” on TikTok are wearing over-sized plastic frames, then next year they’re clamoring for thin wire frames with comically small lenses.

Rather than trying to keep up with the lastest craze, your best bet is to skip it and opt for the kind of classic, timeless shades that have been making men look cool for decades.

There are seven core styles that I recommend (my favorite of which is the Persol pair below made famous by Steve McQueen), any one of which could serve as the only pair you’ll ever need to own.
