Pretty much everyone who’s ever stepped foot in IKEA’s showroom or website has had the same thought:
“There must be some viable other stores like IKEA.”
Sure, the Swedish furniture maker deserves a lot of credit for their modern design and innovative (to put it kindly) approach to assembly, but trudging through its massive warehouse searching for your Billy bookshelf certainly has its drawbacks.
In addition to a stripped down in-store experience that can sometimes feel like you’re shopping in a life-sized dollhouse (or the seventh circle of hell if you go on a Saturday afternoon), their pieces are made from famously fragile materials and their customer service often leaves a lot to be desired.
Fortunately, they’re not the only game in town — or on the internet — when it comes to finding new furniture that won’t max out your credit card.
In this post I’ve rounded up dozens of other affordable furniture stores like IKEA where you can pick up modern home decor that’s just as stylish (though decidedly less Swedish).
Breaking Down the Best IKEA Alternatives
These are the Best Stores Like IKEA for Stylish, Budget-Friendly Furniture & Decor
Wayfair
Basically the Amazon of online furniture retailers, Wayfair is one of the best online furniture stores for selection and affordable prices.
You can find (literally) anything and everything for your home on one site, and unlike IKEA, there’s thousands of brands to explore , so you’re not limited to a singular aesthetic.
In addition to different styles, you’ll also find a wide range of pricing, from budget friendly to luxury, so you can score some sweet deals but also splurge where you want to, plus free delivery on most orders over $35.
Floyd
This IKEA-but-cooler retailer is a direct IKEA competitor in that they follow a similar business model of affordable, flat-pack furniture.
(For those who don’t know, “flat-pack” is the industry term for “build it yourself, sucker!”)
Also like IKEA, Floyd’s style is generally quite modern and minimalist, but their quality is better, featuring sturdier materials that can handle being disassembled and reassembled a few times. (For this reason, the prices are a little higher.)
But Floyd really sets itself apart with its modular, customizable options, like its popular bed frames that can go from queen to king when you buy an expansion pack.
Walmart
If you don’t think Walmart is deserving of a top spot on our list, think again:
Not only do they offer a surprising number of well-known brands, including some exclusive collaborations with decor icons like Queer Eye and Better Homes & Gardens, but a lot of it is actually pretty stylish.
And whereas IKEA can be a bit one-note in terms of style (ie: minimalist and modular), Walmart offers a variety of aesthetics, including contemporary designs, bohemian, traditional, and more.
Target
A lot of bargain hunters love Target stores for their home decor items, but this big box giant has a lot more to offer than just throw pillows and picture frames.
With a huge selection of fashionable furniture for every room of the house, a lot of which bear the name of notable brands and designers, it’s a treasure trove for budget-conscious shoppers with an eye for style.
(As if it wasn’t already hard enough not to go crazy in Target.)
Home Depot
This one may seem like a curveball, but Home Depot offers so much more than just lumber and paint samples.
In fact, their website offers a pretty wide selection of furniture, lighting, and home decor items, including a number of modern styles comparable to IKEA.
Their prices also vary greatly (for instance, you can spend $100 on a coffee table, or $2000), so there’s something for every budget.
Another perk is that their website lets you filter your search not only by price range, but also by brand, style, size, color, and material, so you can quickly find exactly what you’re looking for.
Bed Bath & Beyond
Bed, Bath & Beyond, (formerly Overstock.com) is one of those online furniture sites like Wayfair that seems to have every home item under the sun.
They specialize in reselling furniture that other retailers have liquidated, which means it’s also a great place to score some high-quality furniture for prices that are a lot lower than the usual retail cost.
And with such massive inventory, you’re practically guaranteed to find a style that suits your taste, at a price that fits your budget.
Cost Plus World Market
If you love IKEA for the selection of furniture and home decor almost as much as you love its unique snacks and food offerings, World Market is a great alternative for you.
This American chain store (which is more like a department store than a furniture retailer) sources its merchandise from around all across the globe and carries a vast selection of high quality, eclectic designs.
You’ll find everything from indoor and outdoor furniture, kitchen accessories, dining room essentials, storage solutions, lighting, rugs, and accent pieces.
And while they put a particular emphasis on artisanal home decor, they also offer a huge selection of international foods and drinks.
Big Lots
Big Lots is a lot like IKEA (see what I did there), in that it’s a one-stop shop for your entire home.
Not only do they carry an enormous selection of furniture and decor for your living room to your backyard and every room in between, but they also offer grocery, beauty, and pharmacy departments.
As a liquidation retailer they’re known for their discounts and affordable pieces, but some reviewers complain that it isn’t always the best quality.
Amazon
Amazon is a small upstart online retailer that you’ve probably never heard of.
Alright, fine, who are we kidding?
Amazon is the 800-pound gorilla of the online retail world, and belongs on any list of IKEA alternatives because it has a huge selection of affordable furniture and home decor pieces across every conceivable category.
Plus you get free shipping if you have Amazon Prime (not to mention all the Yellowstone comfort viewing you can handle).
TJ Maxx
If you’ve ever shopped at TJ Maxx for clothes, you know it can be a bit hit or miss; but when it comes to decorating your living space, it’s worth checking out.
With a focus on smaller home essentials, like side tables, accent chairs, lamps, and wall art, TJ Maxx also offers a great selection of storage solutions, bedding, kitchenware, and pet supplies.
And because they purchase surplus inventory from other stores and sell it at budget-friendly prices, it’s also one of the most affordable stores on our list.
HomeGoods
When it comes to affordable home decor and small furniture items, HomeGoods is almost the perfect store.
Owned by the same parent company as TJ Maxx, HomeGoods offers aisle upon aisle of treasures for your home — throw pillows, vases, wall art, side tables, lamps, rugs, and linens — in every color and style, and all at great prices.
(Huge bonus: you don’t have to assemble any of it.)
There’s just one, pretty big downside:
They don’t offer online shopping.
As of October 2023, HomeGoods shut down its online store in favor of the in-person “treasure hunt”, but you can still check out the website to find one of their brick and mortar stores in the United States.
Living Spaces
If you’re on the hunt for fairly priced furniture and decor but want to switch things up from IKEA’s minimalist, Scandinavian aesthetic, Living Spaces is worth checking out.
They’ve got a huge selection that covers everything from cool, modern styles to more cozy and rustic vibes, and even some chic, higher-end options (that still won’t break the bank).
The price point is slightly higher than IKEA (as a benchmark, coffee tables can run from $150 to $2,200) but so is the quality, so you’re still getting the best bang for your buck.
Plus, their clearance section is one of the best places to find some gems and extremely low prices.
H&M Home
Alright, I guess I lied in the introduction up top: some of the stores on this list are just as Swedish as IKEA.
And the similarities don’t end there.
While H&M Home doesn’t have nearly the selection that IKEA stores carry, it has a similarly cool European aesthetic, along with IKEA’s penchant for extremely affordable pricing.
While they specialize mostly in home accessories and decor rather than larger pieces, you can find some great deals on small space items like shelves, side tables, and nightstands.
Urban Outfitters
Much better known as a clothing store that caters to a chic young demo, Urban Outfitters takes a unique spin on home decor and small furniture, catering to those with a taste for the eclectic, vintage, and bohemian.
Their collection is perfect for anyone looking to infuse their space (in this case, most likely a dorm) with personality, offering mirrors, wall art, lighting, bar essentials, and more, that are simultaneously chic and funky.
While their price points can sometimes hover above IKEA’s, you’re paying for distinctive pieces that can transform a room — and act as a conversation piece.
Scandinavian Designs
Essentially the grown-up version of IKEA, this furniture retailer is worth checking out when you’re ready to spend a little bit more on things for your home.
Scandinavian Designs (and its sister store Dania Furniture), specializes in modern, artful home decor and furnishings for a variety of tastes and budgets, but for the most part, you can expect clean lines and elegant simplicity.
They don’t offer the same huge selection of products and categories as IKEA — for instance, they don’t sell appliances or kitchen items — but what they lack in quantity they make up for in style and quality.
